Title: Amigas remain a cut-above the rest
Post by: Hungry Horace on August 09, 2006, 01:17:46 PM
I dont know how any of you are into "scene demos" - but this little bit of recent news certainly makes for interesting reading.

Some of you may know that there is a meeting called The Assembly (http://www.assembly.org/2006/) which s held in Finland, where various demo-sceners get together to display their works, or simply to watch the spectacle.

They run a compeition for the best demo entered each year, where the rules are to present a demo coded for a machine of no greater spec than: an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU with 1GB of RAM. The Assembly website notes: "Competitions on this platform are open for other commercially available personal desktop computing devices within the same performance and price range."

This year, many of you may be pleased to know, the winning entry came from TBL, created for an Amiga 1200 fitted with nothing more than a 68060 50mhz processor, and no doubt a bunch of extra ram.

This is what Kalms/TBL wrote in the readme: " Thanks to all the PC groups who also participated in the competition and attempted to put up a challenge against us. Better luck next time. ;) "

You can get the demo from scene.org. There's a WinUAE config file included for the people who don't have a real Amiga with 68060, or you can watch this video clip here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUv0jSYRBZo)

Full results list was as follows:

and for the really keen, here's a pic of the event:

Amiga demos kicks ass! Very good to see that talented groups like TBL, Ephidrena, Fairlaight etc. are still active. Respect!

I will attend Norwegian demoparty Kindergarden in November.

Yay! My band Next Life will play at Kindergarden.

BTW, that Starsuck/TBL demo is pretty cool. Very good they have get rid of those pixelated naked women, which brings Amiga demos one step away from being too nerdy for "normal" people. I remember preparing some demos for a lecture about chiptunes at the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts, man it was hard to find something that did not contain any embarrasing elements.

Anyone seen the 64k intro Gift by Potion? This is a really killer 10-minutes production with great music, realtime rendering + alot of impressing and nice visuals. Really pushes evry limit there is, which, I think reflects the Amiga scene and its attitude.

Download an archive with Gift + some other nice productions: http://www.electricdungeon.org/NL%20media/amidemos.zip (http://www.electricdungeon.org/NL%20media/amidemos.zip)

Just execute each file in AmigaDos. AGA required, FPU required for some. Enjoy!
