Title: Top 3 Amiga Games ?
Post by: brcu on July 16, 2006, 05:00:47 PM
What are your top 3 Amiga games ?

Mine are  :)

1, Kick Off 2
2, Chaos Engine
3, Skidmarks

Some others that just missed out are Superfrog, Sensible Soccer, Alien Breed and Speedball 2. My main memory of the amiga was trying to beat my brother at KO2 and moaning when he used the dubios tactic of running into my players legs when he was sliding so he would either get a penalty or get my player sent off  >:(

Always a toughie when trying to pick fave games, I always seem to remember other games I enjoyed after posting an initial list.

For now, off the top of my head I will go for the following.

1. Wings
2. Rocket Ranger
3. Prince of Persia

And even now I'm suddenly thinking that I should add SWOS, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Lemmings, Indy & Fate of Atlantis (currently using the PSP version of Scumm to relive this classic), Lotus Turbo Challange, Cannon Fodder, Crammonds F1 Grand Prix, Champ Manager, Pinball Fantasies/Illusions, Shadow of the Beast trilogy and Xenon 2.

Gonna stop there or that list will just keep going.

1. SWOS.

Played it far, far too much. Loved it. However, i don't think i could go back to it now. You need a good joystick, i had a competition pro mini (loved that thing - imported it from the uk several times) and it gave me total control. I can't play it either with a joypad or an analogue stick (or keys on PC) i just can't move the players well enough, i always miss the ball. I used to be good at it too. No one played me good. Plus Pro Evo 5 is really a fantastic game, honestly better than swos, because you really feel like no two matches are ever the same.

2. Dungeon Master.

I bought a 500 because of this game, and in my eyes it is still the best RPG, i enjoyed it much more than Eye of the Beholder. Hard to play on PSP though because it's mouse driven. Tried mapping the number pad keys (np_7 and np_9) to the square and circle buttons on the PSP, but every time i pressed them it would turn four or five times. I could never make just a single 90 degree turn.

3. Paradroid 90.

Great on c64, I felt it was even better on Amiga. If you really concentrated you could last a really long time, but then it could all be over in a second. Very atmospheric. Would have been better if each ship had its own collection of droids, because there would have been greater incentive to reach later ships, and despite different level layouts it did get repetative. Still love it.

I have tremendous nostalgia for amiga games. Keep it up, pspuae!

i now play it with the analogue stick of a PS2 pad on my PC, and i dont think i've everbeen better at the game! took me a while to adjust, but there's not other control system for me now.

no no no no no!! pro eveo i find dull and lifeless... and evry game is the same for me. usually nil-nil or one-nil.   SWOS is a million times more fun, because it doesnt try to "simulate" football. i cant see how you can compare the two given the massive difference in playing styles..... but i will still say that SWOS wipes the floor with Pro Evo for enjoyment, since its more of an "arcade football"

I totally agree mate and playing PES5 online against people of all abilities recreates the wonderful world of football excellently.

Scorelines on PES5 generally reflect the abilities of the players, i think as good as SWOS is its easier to fluke wins besides...i'm a sinner i prefer KO2 to SWOS  :o

Use DevHook, the Legal 1, that is ment for running / Emulating higher firmware. I tried it lastnight, works with 2.60 UMD`s, aint tried a 2.71 UMD yet (cause aint got 1). The new version of DevHook emulates FW2.71 now.

Aint heard of Dax pack, but I wouldnt try using FW2.71 on it if its and old version.

Version 0.44 supports 2.71 emulation.

for Stuart Campbell's review of SWOS 2006 go here:

http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/swiz2/swiz2.htm

remember SC of Amiga Power? For me the magazine and especially he was an integral part of my Amiga gaming life. I loved that magazine, and still do. There has never been a games mag that could touch it. I didn't always agree with him, but in my eyes Stuart Campbell was and is a truth-sayer, like Johnny Warren (any Aussies here?) and Bill Hicks were truth-sayers. You knew their opinions were theirs, never influenced or led by commercial or corporate interests.

Believe me, no one loved SWOS as long or as hard as I. I was a grovelling, co-dependant slave to that game for years. Played SWOS briefly again on PC last night and i will conceed that in two-player mode i'm sure some of the old magic remains. But now Pro Evo is my game. I wish I had fast enough internet to play online, but the only servers are european and my lag just pisses people off. I've never played Winning Eleven because my Ps2 isn't chipped (!) so i can't comment about that.

I'm glad to see Dune getting mentions, that was another favourite. A unique game-novel RPG with some of the best game music ever heard. Runs pretty well on psp, but doesn't play great because it's mouse driven.

Also Formula One Grand Prix was brilliant. I had zero interest in F1 before this game, but now i have some (although it's died down somewhat). Used to play full-length 60 lap races and never got bored. No F1 game has captured me since - i got the official 2006 on Ps2, but it left me cold.

Its almost impossible to mention only 3 games when talking about the very best which the Amiga had to offer back in the good old days. Off the top of my head:

1. Civilization
2. Kick Off 2
3. Chaos Engine

... although any of the following titles could be on the top 3 as well: F/A 18 Interceptor, Alien Breed, Rail Road Tycoon, Millenium 2.2 & Deuteros, Secret of the Monkey Island, Champions of Krynn, Eye of the Beholder, Xenon 2, Blood Money, Elite, Carrier Command, Moonstone, Hunter,  Battle Squadron, It Came From The Desert, Speedbal 2, Colonization, Formula 1 GP,  Great Giana Sisters,  Zak McCracken, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Rally Cross Challenge, Stunt Car Racer, Pinball Dreams & Fantasies, Microprose Golf, Neuromancer, Project X and many other.

For me....

1. It came from the Desert.
2. Conflict : Middle East.
3. Wings of Fury.

Got them all on my PSP, Although wings of fury is very hard to control when you dont have a joystick.

I never owned an amiga myself. Used to play with a mates amiga fairly often. The games I remember most fondly are:

Wings

Silk worm.

1. Turrican 2
2. Supercars 2
3. Moonstone

... not to mention the many other games that kick arse :-)

I actually think that Lemmings deserves a mention here as it was a true Amiga game, not ported too well for the other platforms, Amiga version was pretty much the best version.

I find it impossible to list just three games. Perhaps if I narrow it down a bit. I mean, some of the games that were great when they were new don't have the same appeal now, simply because the genre has evolved and improved since then. Others are without any similar "modern" versions at all. For instance, the Lotus series were great racing games, but since I have a lot of quality racing games these days, it isn't one of the games I'm most eager to play on my Amiga now.

Hmm. No. Didn't make it any easier. Still can't mention just three. I'll try to narrow it down further by only listing games that (as far as I know) can exclusively be played on the Amiga.

Here goes, in random order:
Silkworm
Rick Dangerous
Moonstone

...Battle Isle... Darn!

Heh. I must admit I haven't actually tried any og the Lotus'es for a long time, so I might be wrong to dismiss it. I can't imagine it being as fun as, say, Wipeout, but I haven't tried, so who am I to judge?

Still love Stunt Car Racer, though. Nothing like that around these days.

...and why aren't anyone able to do a better pinball game than the pinball dreams-series? Those not only age with style, they are still way better than anything else I've tried. If I had no interest in the Amiga and retro stuff I'd still go for one from that series rather than anything released later on.

Now this thread is getting interesting, :). As I have always said, I would rather play Amiga games, purely for the gameplay and lastability. I still play them all now, and the best thing is, commodore didnt hold back on quality as amiga's are still running today. Sure they might have had the odd production problem, but name me 1 thing today that actually lasts like the amiga and other home computers of that time.

My kids werent around in the Amiga rein. However they love it and the games as I did, when i was a little older than my eldest. My brother is 1 of these, move on people. The best thing is the new games he buys for his Xbox, pc, are finished with in a week, and thats it. Im still trying to finish Amiga games I never finished back when they were fresh.

My favorite game has to be DUNE, played alot and lost count of how many times i have finished it. That game had a couple of ways to end it, but it just kept calling to me, even after finishing it. The GUI, the music, the gfx, they were all spot on.

Stunt car racer, is 1 of those classic's, spent many a day on this game, playing it over and over. As are the lotus's and super car's. Like Emu, I prefer Super Cars 1, as Super Cars 2 went over the top abit, still a good game though. As for lotus, my favorite has to be Lotus 2, and playing it over killera (when it works) is great.

Pinball Dreams, IS still as fresh as the day it was released. I remember 3 or 4 of us gathering round an Amiga in my dads shop, with jaws dropped. It was a perfect pinball simulation in every way. I have not come across anything that comes close to it even today. Pinball Fantasies, was great also, basically it was like an addon, as in different tables. The jury is still out on Pinball Illutions (was that even 21st Century), never really played it.

Anways, thats my ramble, ;).
Title: Re: Top 3 Amiga Games ?
Post by: Hungry Horace on May 12, 2007, 12:13:50 PM
pinball illusions, with the multiball, and the lack of bugs that fantasies have (2 tables are faulty) and without the "wmptiness" of the tables on Dreams,.... is actually probably my fave.

Dreams is also unplayable on anything expect pspuae too, as i need the CD32 pad layout, which winuae wont let me do for my PS2 pads on pinball dreams.

i will reccommend  the Gottlieb Pinball Hall of Fame for PSP though.  real tables on the PSP... and "Black Hole" is an ABSOLUTE classic.

need to turn the PSP on its side for a good button layout though.

I played and tremendously enjoyed Pinball Dreams, Fantasies and especially Illusions back in the day, but the Pro Prinball series on PC blows them all out of the water, with its completely convincing physics engine and deep table designs. Timeshock is my favourite - i heartily recommend it.

Hi, my first post, had to think long and hard on this as there were so many great games.

I could list a hundred at least  :)

F-19 Stealth fighter

I remember my dad buying me this when i was 12, and how daunting the manual looked at first. Huge game, i loved flying for hours and then try to make it back to the aircraft carrier before i ran out of fuel. I still have the map i got with it! but sadly not the game and box  :(

Dreamweb

The demo of this game instantly gripped me, i was only young but the graphics and gameplay were immense at the time, remember begging my ma for months and finally got it at christmas.

Premier manager 3 (or maybe 2)

Both were classics, the transfer system and overall menu screens were much better in 3 but it failed miserably on the matches, they took way too long and i hated the 3d view.

I detested the pinball games, maybe i was too young to appreciate them, it seemed every week another was released. They used to be bundled with every compilation pack i bought and they never ever got played.

I found a gem of a game called 'Snoopy and Peanuts' or something like that...it's a really well made game...you walk around as Snoopy and the graphics are really easy on the eyes.

I've always liked the Icom Simulations like De'Ja VU 1 and 2, Uninvited, and now I'm finally working on Shadowgate.

There r many cool little puzzle-type games that work so well with PSP..

my question about save-states was if you can delete the ADF if you have one (a save-state for a partucular game)...something tells me you cant...just wondering..

yes, you can delete the ADF, providing that you no longer need to access it during gameplay. (this is what happens with the RISS, where the "install adfs" are not included with the save-states)

There are too many good ones for the best AMIGA model A-500+ to make a top 3.
Title: Re: Top 3 Amiga Games ?
Post by: Hungry Horace on October 13, 2007, 06:59:59 PM
lmao, tha A500+ was just a cheap rush-job by Commodore to keep up demand for A500 sales, when really they should have been releasing the A1200 by then.

Not quite as bad as the A600 (no numpad - wtf?!) but the best amiga model??!  lol

oh for sure!  "Consume Self" "Hit Self" etc...lol

Amiga's sound is great...I spent alot of time with MED.

Ok, the SAVE STAE is only for games the load the entire game to ram?
I imagaine a multi-disk game must need a STATE for each ADF.

Can you tell me why the music is out-of-snyc?

Btw, Space Shuttle Simulator looks really cool.  I also Like Nightbreed: The Interactive Movie...But I'm stuck in the underground maze.

Amiga was really good for making movie-games.  Fright Night is one of my favorites as well...(can be fustrating though)

no, thre seems to be some confusion here.  a save-state is simply the "dumping" of the amigas memory to disk. The game could otherwise be running from one or more ADF, and the save-state used to "jump-into" the game at a certain point.

However, we have desived the RISS, which "abuses" this function, and allows us to run save-states which are entirely independent of the ADFs. This means there is no need for extra disks even if the game is usually multi-disk.... all from 1 single save-state file.

the RISS FAQ goes into far more detail:

My real A500+ reads all A500 "The best model" disks plus it runs it's own 1MB disks like Puggsy and Lemming's 2 too, so there for A500+ is the best AMIGA model in my point of view.

Even all the Dizzy's work on my real A500+, and those are the so called non working A500 games.

My drive broke at some point and I replaced it with an upgrade before playing the Dizzy game though, which could be why.
Title: Re: Top 3 Amiga Games ?
Post by: Hungry Horace on October 14, 2007, 11:04:18 AM
A500+ does -not- play all a500 games "out of the box".... that's a fact. It's a kickstart incompatibility thing, which can be fixed with something like TUDE of ReloKick.

the best has to be the A1200 with HD mate :p

AGA, more memory, better kickstart, better expansion options and fast loading. top-dollar :D

Accesories like a Hard Drive doesn't count because this is about the system with the best games for it.

I dig how the underside of the A1000 has signatures etched into the plastic, including a cat paw.

Title: Re: Top 3 Amiga Games ?
Post by: DC on October 17, 2007, 04:50:44 AM
However not a game, I spent gobs of time with Deluxe Paint III and MED editor.

The AGA games I never really got to see much.  I remember having a new A500 with the 512k expansion delivered ...for only 310 bucks!

Anyway, it played most games I could get.

I was excited about the A3000 but then disappointed to hear it had problems with games.

The thing that was superior about Amiga as I remmeber was the sound capibility that IBM or Mac couldn't do for years afterword.

The CD32 didnt go over so well here, I'm not sure if I've ever seen one in person...Let alone where to get games.

I guess the A2000 always seemed the the best of them.

The Shadow Of The Beast series were, offhand, the best I knew of all around.

For some reason, I liked Crazy Cars II for it's simplicty....
..Wide open highway, real maps of Nevada and New Mexico, a F-40, and a cop chasing you.

Yeh Crazy Cars 2 was abit confusing, as it was also named F40 Pursuit Simulator. I done a RISS State for it in downloads, if you havent already got it, :)

doesnt count???  who made you the "rule-master"!  lmao

A4000 had an HD out the box, and is essentially an a1200 in many respects so i guess i'd pick that.

but i still say an A1200 with HD is the best gaming amiga available!

at the time, the best would have been the original kickstart 1.3 A500 imho, if you want to be pedantic ;)

@ DC - OctaMED rocks. Thanks to that baby i'm now a qualified audio-engineer and producer!

I am heavily biased towards footy games which make up my top 3

SWOS
Kick Off 2
Premier Manager

Non Footy

RoboCod (James Pond 2)
Lotus III
Rainbow Islands

But there are many more, I've yet to find a machine that matches the Amiga for sheer playability in its games

I prefered Kick Off 2 to SWOS back in the day!  :o ...I used to have quite regular competitions with my fellow Amiga chums.  ;D

Another footie game I used to love was Microprose Soccer... sure it wasn't as good as Kick Off - but bending unrealistic banana shots into the net was fun.

Everyone has different tastes of course but for me a game that takes weeks to complete, and keeps you hooked throughout scores highly, especially when you consider a few floppy disks to hold such a task, rather than a whole DVD! (like todays releases on ps3, xbox360)

with that in mind:

1. Dungeon Master
2. Captive
3. Eye of the Beholder II

I think I'll go with:

Frontier: Elite II
Speedball II
Last Ninja Remix

So many great games, how can you choose 3?

At the moment I would probably choose

Putty
Turrican II
Hired Guns

although, depending on my mood, that could change because I still find myself playing Lemmings, Alien Breed series, Rainbow Islands, Furry of the Furries, Heimdall and so many others. Heck even the mediocre games are pretty fun and could end up on my list depending again on my mood.

for me a simulation is about the accurate recreation of events or situations.... flight sims, certain racers. (eg. F1GP) or business sims... not about whizzing buzzers and flashing lights!
