Title: WinUAE movie recording
Post by: skateblind on November 17, 2009, 05:30:13 PM
Dear TCD,

I really want to make videos in WinUAE of my favourite games, but I am worried that quality might suffer or the file size might be too big to upload to the internet. Do you have any tips, suggestions or guides on how to do this efficiently?

Your secret admirer,
Skateblind

Dear skateblind,

worry not, for I have an answer for you!
The great guys over at Recorded Amiga Games have made two really good tutorials!
The simple way : http://recordedamigagames.ath.cx/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=7 (you might want to start with this one)
The recommended way : http://recordedamigagames.ath.cx/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=94 (this one is a tad more complicated)
Beware that there are also some treacherous HowTo's on the net, so try to avoid them.

I hope that this will get you on your way and that you'll be recording WinUAE movies happily ever after  :)

Sincerly yours,
TCD

Well, with the built-in recorder you always get all frames, no matter how fast or slow the emulation runs :) In the end it's a matter of taste and the built-in recorder is for free ;)

Fraps is certainly great, if you want to pay for a video capture program, but I would go with TCD on this one.

If a games slows down while I am recording within WinUAE, because it captures all the frames, does that mean the video will look like the game is running at full speed?

Yep, exactly that ;) Even if the game runs at 1 FPS the result will play at 50 (PAL) or 60 (NTSC) FPS :)

That is very cool. Might show off my skills at Another World then, have it run at 1 fps and make it look like I am amazing it. ;)

Yes, yes that's one possible use for it  :P

To record video's, I recommend downloading the free XVID codec for video (faster encode engine than MP4) and LAME ACM MP3 for audio, but I've found it's sometimes best to record using PCM then use virtualdub to encode the audio to MP3 afterwards for better sync and less CPU overhead during recording.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm
http://www.virtualdub.org/

You can make it work with a powerful single core and low resolution with no filters, but you really need a dual core for best results.

No tutorial - just info on what I use to record vids. Once you have a recording, you can upload xvid+lame files to places like Youtube and it will convert it for you to FLV, as it supports these two codecs.

I must go now; I've been to an office party and only now starting to sober up. Must go to bed.

Ah, the quick and dirty way ;) Not the worst option, just make sure you set the XVid capture to a reasonable quality setting. Otherwise you'll end up in artifact hell ;D

True TCD, quick and dirty! Pretty much the same as your link:

Actually, considering the lossy format, it works pretty damn well and you do get small file sizes. I did the two ClassicWB vids this way:

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/features.htm
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/tutorials.htm

and on HD quality, considering it's been transcoded from xvid->flv/mpeg4, it still looks fine with no artifacts. Even on normal youtube quality, which is notoriously bad, it isn't too bad.

I may have used a WinUAE filter whilst recording, or it may have been pixel perfect sharp. Well, almost given the lossy codec.
