Title: Amiga Games that can be hacked / modded / edited
Post by: Hungry Horace on September 21, 2007, 03:33:34 PM
ok, a new sub-forum, and a new topic to boot.

what games do you know how to edit? anyone wanting to know how to edit such games should just ask! perhaps we can get to building some customised PSPUAE versions?

these ones are where i've taught myself:

Bloodwych
- Maps (80%)  , characters / object stats

SWOS
- Graphics , Teams, Career files (partial)

Mega Lo Mania
- Graphics , level-shape , text (ooh tricky!), sound

i wont go into those with editors just yet.

Indyheat! Indyheat! Indyheat! Indyheat!
Some new tracks would be great, I suspect its too tricky though since there is the matter of figuring out how the collision detection works...

here's some games with editors:

SWOS

obviously this makes things easier than a manual edit , but doenst do gfx updates.

http://aminet.net/package/game/edit/SWOSEd

theres also a few other editos out there, but this one is excellent

Lemmings 2

fantastic editor this. you can even use pictures instead of the normal graphics blocks, providing you use the right palette. i'd never realised this was made by Chris Hodges - who is responsible for some excellent AMOS extensions, including AMCAF. And i actually have my own keyfile from "back in the day!"

Cannon Fodder

http://aminet.net/package/game/edit/CFME

not used this much but its ok as i recall. apparentl you can edit graphics in it, but that sounldnt be needed in particualr as i think a lot of the graphics are IFF format anyway.

i once edited the sound effects for Major Motion with Opus (directory utility)...

instead of a 'crash' noise for crashing, i put in a scream wave and so forth.

You should convert these into R.I.S.S so we could try them out on the PSP.  ;D

shouldmnt be a problem doing that with the Lemmings 2 Editor, although a blank ADf will be useful for sharing levels.

SWOS, not really a good idea. You can do more by using winuae / workbench HD setups, and editting text (teams) isnt really a good idea on the OSK.

Cannon Fodder i will look into though. Again, there will need to be a way of sharing the edits ;)

would be nice to have some user-contributions of levels, gfx etc, and get some "alternative" version RISS's avaiaible on site. It would be great of you'd like to contribute like this Evolution.

Is it possible to share custom levels via RISS instead of ADF?

Like after I made my levels. I could just Save State, then connect to PC via USB and Rename the newly made Save to Lemmings 2 TEOL Custom.

imho, it would be better for users to share with the ADF, and then re-savestate it >themselves< after adding new levels. sharing the RISS limits users as they cannot use the levels on WinUAE etc. should they want to.

for example:

1) download editor RISS
2) make levels
3) save into amiga RAM: and onto ADF
4) ADF is shared
5) someone else copies levels from ADF onto the amiga RAM: on their RISS
6) they re-save the RISS with new levels added.
7) Play new levels

what i would do, is once there are enough submissions, maybe compile a new RISS featuring lots of user-submission levels, and mark it appropriately

Maybe the Cannon Fodder one could be done too, so we could make our own Shoot Em Up?

Wing Commander texts can be edited, at least those that reside in the executable, and the fonts even have some international characters.

Test Drive II had a mix of 8SVX and "other" samples. You can't change them all to 8SVX or change the length, but they're all replaceable without much difficulty.

Games like Pinball Illusions and the last SCUMM releases had uncompressed PCM sound in files that had other data in them, but so that the sample data was continuous, or not in very many pieces. So for minor changes you needn't know the whole structure, and just experiment.

I have documented lots of saved game file formats here: http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/ami-form.txt
Most of them can be edited with the Multi-game Character Editor: http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/MCE.lha
