Title: porting PSPUAE on PS2
Post by: mazxim on November 21, 2007, 09:24:01 AM
Hello!

..is there a possibility to port the PSPUAE emulator on PS2? I looking for a decent UAE port on PS2 as the actual one ( PS2UAE (http://www.volny.cz/molej/ps2/uae.htm) ) is really old and completly not optimized to run at the best on this platform. I even discovered this project (http://gentoo.pspuae.com/) that provide though a virtual HD image an environment to work comfortably with the PS2's toolchain. Do you think that could be a good start point to work on?

I very much appreciate any suggest.

bye

I dont know how feasible this is admit, i guess its down to the simiarities in hardware architecture, and develeopment enviornments / code.

There is a fair bit going on atm, so its not going to be  a priority, but i'm sure the devs will take it into consideration

Thank you for the answer. About the hardware issue - I'm quite optimist ;) because these systems shared lots (both have MIPS processor, if I'm not saying wrong, so that might shared the same instructions set) - despite as I read here (http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/playstation/2005/02/psp_officially_as_powerful_as_ps2.html), PS2 appear to be on the whole more powerful than PSP.

My best wishes and in any way congratulations for what you have actually done!

Well, they both have their pros and cons. For CPUs, the PS2 has a great 64 bit main CPU, and a 36MHz (slow) 32 bit sub CPU; the PSP has two mostly identical 32 bit CPUs that run slightly faster than the PS2's main CPU. I give the edge to the PSP there. The memory is much faster on the PS2, giving it the edge when transferring data around. The video on the PSP is more advanced than the PS2, but maybe just a touch slower. So if you need speed with your video, the PS2 is better, but if you need features, the PSP is better. The PS2 has a wider range of available input devices, can have USB memsticks, and might have a full harddrive; The PSP has guaranteed input available always (it's built into the system for heaven's sake! ), has wifi, Pro Duo memsticks, and might have PC access via USB. Maybe a slight edge to the PS2 there for the range of possible input devices.

Anyway, maybe after we get the new version going on the PSP, I might look into adding PS2 to it as well. My system is set up for doing apps for both, and my PS2 is right here next to the computer. I just won't bother until the PSP version is doing well. No reason to consider it before then. And yes, I do have a harddrive in my PS2. It's also hooked to my local network via ethernet.

Interesting hardware analysis PS2 vs PSP

Hello! Here me back. Even if can't follow the develop directly
trying your new releases (I don't have a PSP) apparently you have
made some progress with 0.71 version. Any chance to see an attempt
to port that on Playstation 2?

Feel free also to write something about the backstage of your
coding experience or some thought related, it's intresting anyway.
Thanks for the attention, best wishes!

Not sure how to  reply to this.

Im not a coder, im still learning, so porting it to PS2, is beyond me at present.

Swap Magic works on the PS3, maybe one that works with the PS3 RAM via the Swap Magic method would work even better then one set up for the PS2 RAM settings would.

Sure SM is for PS2 but surely it could also run a PS3 Fast RAM version whilst if you play it on the PS2 it will run slowly.
