The Xbox 360 version of SWOS is FANTASTIC!
The new graphics are delicious and the plays super smooth.
There are a few small flaws (no slow motion replays, a few online bugs). But overall it a worthy addition to the franchise, and currently the best version available!

where's the "ban" option?
we'll have no such sacrelidge / advertising here thank you!
-
LOL, hardly advertising. He brought it up and I agreed with him.
And as a long time fan of the original SWOS (been playing from original to emulated on my XBox up to as recently as last week), I can say with some authority that the Xbox Live Arcade version is a god send.
Same great game with spiffy new graphics and a (slightly flawed and hopefully soon to be fixed) online mode!
Thanks for the SWOS savestate though horace. Nice to have the original in my pocket for trips. Sure plays better now than the last time I tried it (few months ago).
-
the best version available!
I reckon this was the part Horrace wanted a ban for saying as its not on the amiga! lol
-
^^ of course.
you cant better the original just by enhancing a few gfx/ sounds. (you can already do online play via winuae-kaillera)
I've spoken with a few 360/amiga SWOS players about this since the release, and there is a general agreement of it's under-achivement and some very obvious flaws. During development i pointed out a few glaring omissions over on amigagames.com , and one of the codies representatives tried to give some defence. However, he quickly give up on defending it when my critique of what it was -still- going to lack, proved not only correct, but also unlikely to change.
it's what i'd expect from codemasters, and even more from something limited to only MS platforms.
oh and i assume they have even dropped the Vista version now? Seems as if they dont -want- to maximise the market of the game. oh well.
-
Well I'm not sure what you think these huge flaws are but you sound anti-MS fanboyish to me because it plays EXACTLY like the original, the new graphics are fantastic. And most importantly the new graphics were done by non other than Stoo Cambridge who did the original graphics.
So anyone saying the new graphics are not faithful is wrong. Stoo did an amazing job with all the new pitches and the real time damage from slide tackles and weather effects.
Plus the flaws in the new version are so minor it is absurd to claim they detract from superiority to the classic version.
Sure the online needs to be fixed, but the original did not have that and you can not claim that because you can run it on a PC with UAE that it does. I can understand and get behind the argument that the emulated version is better online but it is not better when playing single player (the career mode is the most fun for me).
But the other flaws are what? No slow motion replays? Hardly breaks the game or effects the fun. No real player names? Yeah because real names for 97 make all the difference don't they? Of course not, I could care less. And what else? Don't tell me the goal wave effect spoils it for you? Because that is far too petty. Sure it should have an off option but I actually really like it (thought I wouldn't though before release).
As someone that has NEVER stopped playing SWOS from the day it came out, (had an Amiga setup until the Xbox could run it emulated and then played that version up until the day before the XBLA version came out) and consider it one of the best games ever created and easily the best football game. I can say with no hesitation that the XBLA Swos is the true heir to the throne of SWOS. And I fully expect the SWOS community to support it and look forward to future updates and fixes to the small problems that we all want fixed (but some get too anal about). After being forgotten by many for a long time, and a couple of average to OK updates, Sensi Soccer finally has a bright future again, as long as we support it. As long as there is money in updating SWOS there will be updates.
And on your Vista point, as long as it sells they will bring it to the PC, so stop hating on it for a few VERY minor flaws and be grateful that we have been given this awesome update. And the Codemasters haters should never forget the work that Stoo Campbell and John Hare did on this update. If Stoo and John are happy with the new version (and I believe they are) then it speaks volumes to me because they ARE Sensible Soccer.
The king is dead, long live the king.

This game is indeed great on xbox live (bar some teething lag issues now and again). I'm not a great fan of the 360 joypad for it though but thankfully I've got the Hori fighting stick which works great on it and is just like the joysticks from days gone by. ;)
If you really dont like the fancy 'enhanced' graphics of this new incarnation then theres always the option to revert to the original look anyway (much the same as the other great Amiga game that's on xbox live 'Speed Ball 2').
Overall I'd rate this as possibly the best , well maybe second best after Bomberman live ???, xbox live arcade game to date. ;D
@parabolee: When your next online send me an invite and I'll test your footie skills... although saying that your previous post mentioned that you've never stopped playing the game! :o
-
Sure will Baboon, my skills are still lacking on the controller though. I love the 360 controller but it aint the same as an Amiga stick that's for sure. I'd get the Hori stick but I play right handed so the buttons are on the wrong side for me! But I may mod a 360 pad so I can use an Amiga stick eventually.
my gamertag is - parabolee77
-
right, my major problems with it are NOT as you seem to think parabolee; what it -is- is not the problem, but rather what the game is -not-.
i see it as a majorly wasted opportunity - and it's within my rights to think that!
no real players, no team updates, no league structure changes? yes -even- 1997 real names are better than imitations!! does it have the right number of cups competitions? the right competitions formats? i mean seriously, as someone who has been editting SWOS for over ten years now i find this piss-poor condsidering the guys have access to the source-code. You might not care for it, but I do!
Does the game yet feature black and blonde players? bald players? mixed-race players? Can it finally select the right away / home combos to not have teams clashing? i very much doubt it, considering it seems the original code is barely touched. Does it finally give you the option to manually defend penaltiy kicks? Where is the multiplayer career mode (you can do it for a season after all, and it's even something you can hack into the old game - but without some minor changes to the source, it crashes) - again, something the game could have done, but doesnt.
and what about the limitations to the online mode? is it synced with online stats? can you run an online league in the game? i think i know the answer.
i'm sorry, but i see the game as codemasters piggy-backing off the success of the original. Of course it will play well being a port of such a great game... but to be BETTER than it?? no. not in my eyes. and definatlely not with that pad!
i never said i didnt like the new graphics - i never said they were unfaithful - but that is basically all the game has going for it over the original when i can already play the old SWOS online with newer teams.
and most importantly, a small game like this -needs- to be multiplatform. I'm sorry, i dont care how much you love your Xbox, not everyone has one (or even wants one) so unless they start adding other platforms, they are once again holding back the potential of this great game.
You're entitled to like it. I'm entitled to think you are wrong beleiving it surpasses the original, when it offers so little extra, and squanders so much promise.
i will happily support it when i genuinely believe it deserves my support.
edit: sometimes i wish i didnt love SWOS, because at least then i wouldnt care ;)
-
So you say you don't rate this game at all but you still reckon it should be multi-platform because its not reaching its full potential?
I personaly reckon this is a great exlcusive for for the 360 and has defo been worth the wait! ...I guess the only people moaning about this game though are the ones without a console to play it on. lol
I think they'll eventualy update the game with patches (like every other game on the 360) with all of the things you have been mentioning anyway Horace.
Game on tonight Parabolee! ;D
-
I can see both sides of the argument... ... especially the "only on xbox" one... this game definately needs to be ported to as many platforms as possible... even as a downloaded game like they do through the playstation 3 or through STEAM.... this is where a lot of games fall flat on their faces... ie its good to start out, but when players stop playing then theres no more fun to be had online. - This is definately one of the places where I'll stick by Mr Horaces side...
HOWEVER...
Updates, etc... Horace has put a considerable effort into updating teams, not just recently but also in the past with CU Amiga.... This makes it obviously possible to play a recent game... But I think you need to see where gameplay starts and stops... Sure its real nice to play with current players, but it shouldn't be put into account of the game itself. Just because FIFA and PES / Winning eleven are now licensing player names and making it the norm it doesnt mean theyre better games... we all know that Swos kicks them both in the balls.
edit : I've not actually played the Xbox version but it sounds pretty decent with damage etc ;)
-
So you say you don't rate this game at all but you still reckon it should be multi-platform because its not reaching its full potential?
no, read again. i said the gameplay itself is excellent, but only BECAUSE it's just a port of the original. Howeer the port itself is a massive under-achiever.
I guess the only people moaning about this game though are the ones without a console to play it on. lol
or those who realise this game has so few additions it could even be ported to a TCP/IP & RTG enabled Amiga.
Why not create at least a PC version? or even and original Xbox version? MS would still have their exclusivity then.
of course it's a great exclusive for the 360, but an incredibly selfish one, and one that may harm the game's success in the long run.
I think they'll eventualy update the game with patches (like every other game on the 360) with all of the things you have been mentioning anyway Horace.
i very much doubt all those things will be added. From what i've seen, few small XBLA games get proper fixes / patches, just the more expensive full games. Yeah, they'll probably sort out the onine bugs and stuff.... but restructure of competitions, additional player types etc etc? really?
@ Emu - i'd be happy just to see the right competition formats if they dont want to pay for player-name iicenses. Cup-Winners cup? when did that last exist???
-
I would love the game to come to every system, I want as many people to love and support SWOS as possible. I own a PS3 and a Wii and Would probably buy it for the PS3 if it was released just to support it.
As for the right number and format of competitions, it has them correct as far as 96/97 is concerned I believe. And since it's career mode is still head and shoulders above everything else out there then I see nothing to complain about. maybe we will get accurate 2008
structures next year.
And I think you couldn't be more wrong about updates ass-ons Horace. Many XBLA arcade games have had expansions and add-ons released. Worms (another Amiga classic) has had a new weapons and levels added for instance. You say it's only "the big ones", well not only is that not true but in my mind SWOS is one of the biggest they have had, don't recall any other XBLA game being announced on stage during an E3 press conference!
If enough people buy Swos and there is support for it, they would be stupid not to release updates and add-ons. In fact I would be suprised if they didn't plan on making this a yearly franchise. It would be cheaper than making a new Fifa/Pro Evo every year and the past has proven people will buy updated footie games each year.
As for all the things you would love to see added to SWOS, we all would love to see that. But you my friend are looking a gift horse in the mouth. The new version of SWOS may not be all that it can be but it is a GREAT start!
I can't believe someone who claims to be a huge SWOS fan is not excited about it finally being updated and officially supported on new platforms (a pc version is still very likely) just because the update does not include every option you dreamt off! Especially when the improvements made are all for the better.
Before this game was announced I actually wrote to both Microsoft and Codemasters and BEGGED them to bring SWOS to XBLA arcade. And when I did all I hoped for was HD widescreen support and online play, so everything else is a bonus.
The way you talk you sound like you would be glad if it never came out. Although I think you give away your anti-Microsoft feelings in several statements and I have a feeling this is more about hating Xbox and being annoyed that the only platform it is currently on is one actively hate. I have a feeling if it came out on PC or PS3 on the same day you would have been happy with it. You are looking for reasons to justify not wanting it because you don't want an Xbox 360.
To say this version of SWOS does not genuinely deserve your support just because it has only made some improvement and not everything on you dream list is offensive to me. That is not the statement of a true SWOS fan, I don't care how much time you spend editing SWOS stats, a true fan supports the survival and future of the brand. And I am sorry to say that UAE SWOS will never bring SWOS to a new audience, hell it has trouble bringing it to all the original fans. We need true updates, newer graphics, HD support and marketing. This is the only way SWOS will be brought back to life and brought to a new audience. I wil support that 100%!
I love my Xbox 360 no more than my PS3, and I could have cared less where it came out as long as it came out. I would love to see it on as many platforms as possible, and the more support it gets the more likely that is. they have already heavily hinted at the chance of a PSP version. So if it sells well I will put good money that it's on it's way to PSP and PC next and as long as Microsoft don't have an permanent excusivity license then PS3 soon after. But it is highly unlikely that MS have exclusivity over every future version of SWOS, just this one. So they make some more updates and call it SWOS 2008 and bingo off to new consoles.
The king is back, all hail SWOS, and kill the heretics :-D

What he said! ;D
I couldn't have put it better!
Anyway sorry for bringing this thread off topic, but its been v good to see people still have passion and love this game soooo much. :)

Anyway sorry for bringing this thread off topic, but its been v good to see people still have passion and love this game soooo much. :)
Indeed, lets remember where we are, ;).
-
you still completely ignore the fact parabiee that i have -every- right to think the game underaachieves if i want to!!
you are OF COURSE free to like it yourself -
As for the right number and format of competitions, it has them correct as far as 96/97 is concerned I believe. And since it's career mode is still head and shoulders above everything else out there then I see nothing to complain about. maybe we will get accurate 2008 structures next year.
lets hope so - but given the delays the game has already suffered, surely it could have been added?
I can help but see this as Codemasters laziness. I honestly believe other developers would have made a better job of it.
And I think you couldn't be more wrong about updates ass-ons Horace. Many XBLA arcade games have had expansions and add-ons released. Worms (another Amiga classic) has had a new weapons and levels added for instance. You say it's only "the big ones", well not only is that not true but in my mind SWOS is one of the biggest they have had, don't recall any other XBLA game being announced on stage during an E3 press conference!
well, sorry - but i've made that statement from what i've been told by other X360 owners. And by big games i mean full-price releases that get the development they need BECAUSE they cost more. With less provit to be made on a game like this, development investment is going to be limited.
In fact I would be suprised if they didn't plan on making this a yearly franchise. It would be cheaper than making a new Fifa/Pro Evo every year and the past has proven people will buy updated footie games each year.
maybe they will, because it would be another way for Codemasters to milk money out of Sensible's excellent work.
The new version of SWOS may not be all that it can be but it is a GREAT start!
yeah, maybe it is a good start, but what i was debating was the fact you claimed the game surpassed the original. Sorry if it hurts you to hear me say this again, but in my eyes it cant do this with a graphics update.
(a pc version is still very likely)
please show me any evidence of this, as i certainly havent seen it. all mention of the Vista version (oh great, even a PC version is limited to an OS that even many PC owners are trying to avoid) seems to have vanished.
And when I did all I hoped for was HD widescreen support and online play, so everything else is a bonus.
Good for you. My visions are broader, and i want to see it done the best. Is that a crime?
Although I think you give away your anti-Microsoft feelings in several statements and I have a feeling this is more about hating Xbox and being annoyed that the only platform it is currently on is one actively hate. I have a feeling if it came out on PC or PS3 on the same day you would have been happy with it. You are looking for reasons to justify not wanting it because you don't want an Xbox 360.
so if i hate MS so much, why would i want to see -at least- a PC version? why would i run a PC at home at all?? and my would I want a PS3 version since i dont have one of those either?
Admittedly, i do beleive if the licence had gone to Sony, we would have been more likely to see a PS3, PSP and maybe even a PS2 version. Alas we will never know. Perhaps in the future... but that doesnt change my opinion of the -current- offering.
To say this version of SWOS does not genuinely deserve your support just because it has only made some improvement and not everything on you dream list is offensive to me.
YOU are -personally- offended becuase i think a game does not fulfil its potential?? Well i'm not apologising for a difference of opinion. You'll have to learn to live with it i'm afraid. The comments are not directed at you, and you are quite free to enjoy the game yourself (although your want for my approval here baffles me)
That is not the statement of a true SWOS fan,
not a "true swos fan"?? oh dear oh dear. That's right up there, it really is.
I don't care how much time you spend editing SWOS stats, a true fan supports the survival and future of the brand.
A brand that i believe owes all to Sensible Software and the team, and not to the classically under-achieveing Codemaster's team. Remember Sensible Soccer 06? remember the screenshots of Cannon Fodder 3D for the PSP? The evidence is there that Codies have been trying to grab what they can from the success of Sensible is pretty easy to see in my eyes.
do you seriously expect me to support the game by buying it for a system i dont own? or even want to own?
And I am sorry to say that UAE SWOS will never bring SWOS to a new audience,
i never said it would. I agree that's a benefit of the new version, but i've already stated how limited i think that new audience will be (Xbox360 owners and err... no one else) - lets hope you are right and future revisions are coming for other platforms.
Critiique such as mine is always going to be harsh for some to hear, but i only do it becuase i want the best, and beleive everyone else also deserves the best from SWOS.
Without criticism, nothing improves.
The king is back, all hail SWOS, and kill the heretics :-D
now please, lets leave it here. i like your passion, but please dont get offended when people dont agree with you. I repsect that you like the game, and can see not ill in any form of SWOS presented, fair enough.
I only ask you to respect my differnece of opinion, especially considering i can justify my views. It is only a game after all, even if the game is SWOS ;)

omfg....
stop acting like a girl horace.... and everyone stop provoking him...
everyones entitled to their opinions... there, thats it... now stop dragging on this topic with aggression or I'll give you a ban Horace ;D
Anyone recall that south park episode, "Giant douche vs Turd sandwich" ... ::)

errr sorry?? i was the one who said he was free to enjoy it if he wanted to!! so you can STFU emu :P
there is no "aggression" - just a difference of opinion... if anything your post is the most outright offensive.
everyones entitled to their opinions.
wasnt that what i already said in my previous post?
Emu, i'm afraid you are the one acting a big girls blouse, i'm sure parabolee can handle a discussion on the topic, even with me not agreeing with him. There is no need for hyper-sensitivity.... we're all adults here.
surely it's more likely that i would give YOU an official warning for being a big lamer and insulting the Admin ::) - if you dont want to read the discussion on the topic, dont read the thread.
even so, i think everyone has made their points, and i'd expect this thread to die-out now that everyone has made their own personal opinions clear.

I really dont care one way or another about this whole rant... its just you're the only one horace thats acting like an uber fanboy kid that won't let it go ... look at the size of your posts and capital letters... come on give it a rest :-*

EDIT:- To clarify my reply, im in the middle, i care not for xbox (My PC has higher spec than XBOX360, so why would i want 1, thats just my opinion), I just knew this thread would end up like this.
Being Site admin, i thought leave it go. Now I step in, im the bad guy, :(.

The original Amiga version is still being played (and online) to this day, some 13 years after its original release.
Seems the Xbox360 version couldnt even manage 2 years ;)

i saw a guest reading this thread, we me having just been looking at the same on EAB, and thought... why not?!

bringing up an old post. . . and I completely agree with horace ^-^...
dont even remember replying to it - lol... complete wasted oppertunity, as was the other "sensible soccer" that was released post-swos around 2000 or something... I bought it and thought it sucked balls... no league, no stats, no transfer bits... I mean... why? - they could have easily copy pasted the old code and just added the different 3d engine, surely?

this is still a locked topic... my bad for posting in here, Lets not be cruel on the other members!
