Title: Walker (RISS)
Post by: Hungry Horace on May 29, 2009, 10:09:17 PM
This is for SoczI, who posted about playing Walker in the shoutbox.

These disks will allow you to create a RISS version of the game. It will take a while to start, but when it does, just save-state it at the beginning of the intro.

make sure to  set the following settings; Kickstart 3.0, 2 meg chip and 6-8 meg fastram (use bogo ram if needed)

and you can try out other cpu/chipset settings etc yourself. (although dont use a chipset-ratio speed when you are loading it!)  Turbo speed floppys should also help quicken the loading process.

THis definately works on original 0.72, and may also work on the Fame/C version.

Hmm... I made the configuration with your directions. However... Nothing really happens when I put the first ADF into DF0. My console hangs up or the workbench tells me it's not a DOS disk in DF0. I'm doing something stupid, right ;) ? I can tell by the "HD" in the file names that there is something more to do with it ;) .

Sorry to butt in, but I suspect HD means High Density, so change the disk type in the settings to something along those lines.

They indeed are, just dont set the memory over 8MB, cause it will crash PSPUAE.

the guys are right, you are after high-density disks.  The game, i think does require a lot of RAM however. (wouldnt you be able to set the ram higher on a Slim PSP FOL?)

i seem to remember before, setting it up to use the shoulder buttons for walking, and the analogue stick for shooting.... as i recall it worked ok like that.

Unfortunatelly I can't seem to get it running. I've set Fastmem to 8, chipmem 2, no bogo. Tried different chipsets and the game crashes or it starts unpacking but...

It unpacks from the first disk, then the second one, then he asks for the first one once more. The "please register" screen from WHD appears and then this pops up:

And everything stops :( .

I have a PSP FAT btw.

You have run out of memory and if that has happened while you were using the maximum memory possible on PSPUAE, then it might not work at all.
What might work is a script which starts workbench and whdload with the minimum possible memory being used, which would give the unpacking process a little more space to unpack to.

Basically, the settings are fine if it gets that far, it has just run out of memory. FOL said you shouldn't set the memory over 8mb, I am not sure if he meant the total memory or just fast ram, either way I would suggest trying to add a bit of bogo(slow) memory along with your 2 chip and 8 fast, if thats at all possible. Try start with 2 chip, 8 fast, the lowest possible bogo memory and see if PSPUAE can handle that.

Otherwise I am sure Horace will know what to do.  8)

i think skate is right, you should be able to push it up to 9 meg or so in total.

Looks like a lack of chipram though... have you definately got it set to 2 meg chip and not 1 meg?

Also... are you using 0.72 original or fame/c ? i admit, i havent tried it on fame/c and it may just be another it's "quirks".

What might work is a script which starts workbench and whdload with the minimum possible memory being used, which would give the unpacking process a little more space to unpack to.

that is exactly what the install disks already do!

i've had nothing but crashes using HD disks and 2meg chip + 8 meg fast, (even on my slim, which i thought had more memory to use?) but i've had a thought as to why.

... edit, i was going to post about deleting the picture files in the gui folder, but i've also created a version using double density disks, which is less likely to crash....

and in case its unbareable with sound, and because it might use a tiny bit less memory, the "no speech" version;

as i suspected, the speech is a bit choppy, but still works on the same memory settings as without.

You can actually toggle the speech on/off on the full version anyway, but still.... here are two versions anyway; (access times may be a little quicker on the non-speech version)

they can be found in the "FAME/C" section of the RISS Downloads;

so much for the comment "Walker is unplayable on PSP" from someone who doesnt have any idea what they are talking about...

It runs pretty well, and you can tweek the speed / smoothness ratio with the cpu setting according to personal preference.
