Title: Setting up an A1200 CF harddrive... help!
Post by: osiris37 on January 19, 2013, 01:59:06 PM
Hi all, I've recently bought a stock A1200 (Kick 3.00) with a view to installing WHDload on an internal HDD, I was wondering if anyone knows of a walkthrough for installing a CF drive (read complete numpy's guide). I've ordered a new Harddrive CF from Amigakit with a longer cable so I can modify the case with a HD slot but it's taking a while and I wanted to work on it this weekend.

Here are the components I have:
Kingston 4gb CF card - formatted as Fat 16 (used to be a HDD CF from amigakit)
Hitachi 1gb Microdrive (type II) - formatted as Fat 16
Amigakit IDE to CF cable / adapter (this slots onto the A1200 Motherboard)
Original Workbench 3.00 Disks (without the additional Install disk) :(
Amigakit EasyADF PCMCIA CF Adapter
Kingston Card Reader

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've managed in the past to get the 4gb partitioned as an an amiga drive in Winuae but it never recognises it in the real A1200 or as CF0 in the PCMCIA slot.
I generally use Mac but I have a bootcamp partition with Winuae 2.5.1 installed.

Cheers :)

with the right CF-IDE adaptor (some dont work) and the correctly formatted CF card (i.e. set up from WinUAE) it should be quite easy.... but you'll need it to  be amiga formatted to work as a boot-able HD for your A1200.

I've always used the SFS file-format, rather than the native amiga FFS format, and you can find a guide for setting it up here:

http://wiki.abime.net/amigaos_workbench/sfs

as for the PCMCIA slot.... i think FOL will have to advise you on this one!

Thanks Horace, I've actually got both cards now working internally now, it's taken me most of the day to find out it was just the Max Transfer field needed amending :) I just need to get WHDload on it now, which I think i'll leave until tomorrow. Then it'll be ready for some classic Bloodwych action :)

Should have said, as Im the one proberly doing your drive from amigakit. You could pm you your order number, so I can check on its status.

On CF in pcmcia, I find it better to format the CF in windows as FAT and smallest block size. This makes the card blindingly fast even on an unexpanded A600.

Thanks Fol, i'll look into that :)

Edit: tried that but still no Joy, I read somewhere that Kingston 4gb cards don't work in the PCMCIA slot, do you know if this is true Fol?

All the best
