Why did you choose a Mac?
« on: March 17, 2008, 05:35:22 PM »
I think it's interesting that people can go from the C64 to the Amiga to Windows and then STAY with Windows. I mean, for Amiga owners the OS is a big part of the Amiga and the love we had for it, and we were angry at the other OS'es that lacked ie. multitasking. How can people suddenly stick to Windows and not move on to the much superior OS X?

I chose a Mac when I almost quit computing because of the shitty XP operating system. I was Windows 2000 user, and accidently tried OS X - which I was VEEERY sceptic to. Suddenly I discovered that I was doing things a lot faster with OS X, and bamh - the rest is history.

But I have to say, I would not have gotten used to XP. Don't get me wrong, I loved Windows 95 and I thought it was a step in the right direction. But having experienced the Amiga days, in the back of my mind, there was a lot of things I felt could be done different and better. I think Windows just didn't develop in a good direction, if any,  and somebody did some serious thinking when creating OS X.

So...  why did you choose a Mac?

Final Cut.

I'm probably in a minority as I've never owned a Windows based PC. After using my Amiga less and less between about 1997 and 2000 (and then it died), I didn't have a great need for a computer and couldn't afford one anyway. Then at Uni I had lots of free access and could hire laptops for assignments. I had been working with a lot of film back then and after leaving uni wanted to edit at home. It was 2003 and FCP was getting a lot of attention. It felt like the right choice. There was also the added bonus (in my mind) of having a system that wasn't heavily targeted by virus' and malware, since I'd started to become a proper googlehound.

Long - short. I don't work with film as much anymore, but the appz, stabiltiy, speed, open source community. It all still feels right.

Now, back to that cheese sarnie.

I had a suitable PC configuration and so I'm running OSx86 10.5.3 on my machine. Fully compatible and stable, even on an AMD processor.

I think it's interesting that people can go from the C64 to the Amiga to Windows and then STAY with Windows

I went VIC 20 --> C64 --> Amiga 500+ --> Amiga 1200 --> Amiga One XE --> Mac mini

I bought the Amiga One when I still thought that Amiga Inc were serious about reviving the Amiga, but eventually gave up and bought the Mac mini. I have to use a Windows pc at work and couldn't face having one at home as well. It seemed to me that OS X was the next best thing to Amiga OS. Many frustrating hours spent trying to resolve dependancies with Debian on the Amiga One put me off Linux ;D

OS X seemed very strange and unintuitive at first. I have now got used to, and like OS X, but don't presently have the inclination to get to know it as well as I did Amiga OS. It's a real bonus being able to use E-UAE and VICE on OS X though ;D

I was a PC user, started with Windows 3.1 after the Amiga, went through 95, 98, ME (yuk!), 98SE and XP. Finally got sick and tired of having to update antivirus, spam, adware software before I could do anything with my computer. Then I'd be in the middle of something major and BSOD!!

I had a look at Vista, hoping that would be what I really wanted. Then went out and tried Mac OS X (Tiger) and came home with an iMac  ;D

Very easy to use, much faster, minute threat from viruses etc (although as popularity grows, I expect this to change), but mostly a transparent OS. I can just get on with what I want to do, when I want to do it. Fantastic.

I think along the same lines as you grasstust. For me, Linux or OS X seems the natural successors to Workbench or just in general for Amiga lovers. Both OS's have something to love about them, a great community and that similar "love" about their usage as we all had in the Amiga.

I started off with a Windows 98SE PC after my A1200, then onto XP. XP is a solid OS. Nothing much to love about it but it does do everything that's asked of it in general. I moved to a Mac in 2006 finally after threatening for so long. I simply wouldn't go back for my personal computer. I love the style of the hardware, the speed of the OS and like Badders said the transparency of the OS. Don't get me wrong, it still annoys me from time to time but not in anyway like XP does. I have the misfortunate of using XP daily at work so I'm well used to it's foibles.

Leopard was another nice step up for me. Finder in Tiger pissed me off. It looked horrible, usage was average (give me DirWorks anyday ;)) but in Leopard Finder now works the way it should.

Amiga emulation is a little lacking compared to WinUAE but for general gaming E-UAE works. We just all need someone to pick up the development of E-UAE to take it to the next level as Richard Drummond seems to be off it.

I use my Mac mainly for music making, along with the normal stuff. XP or Vista could do it just the same but it somehow works better for me on OS X. Long may it stay that way.

Pro audio applications stability. (Digital Perfomer being my favorite)

My main sequencer in my studio has always been Mac based. But, I still use Windows machines as dedicated samplers (GigaStudio, etc.)
I've got no beef against Windows per se. Since my "day job" is being an IT consultant, I've got to keep up on making sure all the systems I come into contact with run smoothly for my clients.
