PSPUAE compatibility with different PSP's
« on: June 10, 2007, 11:46:23 AM »

Thought I would post this, as to help newbie's to the PSP scene. I know its not news but its important, as over the last couple of months we have had people new to the scene buying things they shouldnt or dont have to. In atempts to get PSPUAE working.

So heres the FACTS.

PSP Firmware Version Required

V1.00
V1.50
V2.00 (using Tiff Exploit / GTA E/Xloader)
V2.50 (using GTA E/Xloader)
V2.60 (using GTA E/Xloader)
V2.71 (using HEN-D, GTA E/Xloader)
V3.03 (using HEN)

No point list higher FW's. As ill explain next.

PSP Custom Firmware Version Required (explained below)

V2.71 SE
V3.02 OE
V3.03 OE
V3.10 OE
V3.30 OE
V3.40 OE

Most people are comfortable using the above methods (V1.50 can run anything). Alot would rather have V1.50 (which was considered the GOLDEN FIRMWARE a year ago).

So in order to get V1.50 you would need to downgrade your PSP. This is achieved by running a program that would force the PSP into flashing the V1.50 FirmWare on to your PSP's flash memory. Once this was done, it would enable your PSP to run any custom code.

Now at present there is 1 downgrader (in my opinion, as im going on personal experience) that downgrades flawless. This downgrader is ofcourse the n00bz downgrader for PSP FirmWare Version 3.03 (ONLY). This downgrader does require you to have a FirmWare of 3.03 (if you have any FW below 3.03 then update to 3.03) OR BELOW!!!!! (if you have 3.10, 3.30, 3.40 or 3.50 then your out of luck at the moment, until an exploit is found for these FW's). It also requires you to have an upatched version of Grand Theft Auto - Liberty City Stories (This is needed to run the downgrader code, it has to be the original release of the game and not the later re-release, that had been patched to stop GTA Eloader exploit).

There maybe other downgraders that dont require the GTA - LCS game, but you will have to search around for info.

Now, once you have V1.50 on your PSP. You can upgrade to a Custom Firmware, this works by Boot Strapping the V1.50 Kernel to the Custom Firmware Kernel (e.g. V1.50 Boot Strapped to V3.40). This is considered the new GOLDEN FIRMWARE, as it has all the features of a V1.50 PSP aswell as all the features of a V3.40 PSP.

The only disadvantage to any exploitable FirmWare is it opens the door to piracy (Here at pspuae.com, we are not interested in this aspect, as its wrong. It also hurts the homebrew scene. So any discussion of ISO's are not welcome here).
If you do decide on the Custom FirmWare route, then please read the readme's and DONT trust any pre-setup ready to run Custom Firmwares. As they could brick your PSP and you wont be running anything. Safest option is to make the Custom Firmware setup yourself.

Now some FACTS about the emulator itself.

To use PSPUAE, it needs the following;

1) Some .adf files (Amiga Disk Images)
2) Amiga KickStart ROMS (Dont ask for these, try google. Also AMIGA FOREVER KICKSTART ROMS are not compatible)
Also a note on KS ROMS (Make sure you rename them correctly)
3) Some knowledge of the Amiga Hardware (e.g. Setting up the emulator, use WinUAE to familiar yourself with the options and how and what they do)
4) Read the README, we are still getting questions about things that are listing clearly in the readme (I posted a comprehensive guide a month or 2 ago, on how to install it, this can be found HERE

Hopefully, I have explained everything, if I have missed something, please let me know.

To add to this post, all psp's can be downgraded using the pandora method.

I have a PSP slim with firmware 3.71 and when I run PSPUAE I get this message "The game could not be started. (80020148)".

I believe I have to change my firmware as stated in the above message. Any news about my version?

PS: Even if I had a good version for the downgrade I didn't found any instructions how to do it in this site. The installation guide assumes I have the right version of firmware. (and if it must be custom the it assumes I know how to change my firmware and that I have done so.)
