i'm sorry john, but i can see from your profile you dont have the real hardware anymore, so you cant lay any claims to being able to make a comparisson.
i have tired powerstrip and 100hz and , yes it is a marked improvement, but is is NOT as smooth as the real thing! i have access to both, and i have been able to compare. Where you will notice it most is games like Pinball Dreams / Fantasies, where you've got variable speeds of scrolling which can shift direction quickly.
It's a windows / emulator fault by this time, and not a problem with the screen refresh.
Also, no version of UAE has perfect sound, just a reasonable interpretation. Having studied Music technology i can tell you that the only way to get a genuine repoduction of the amiga hardware sound would be through including emulation of the filters created naturally through running through the hardware itself. This is definately something UAE does not do. it's like comparing an an analogue synthesiser with valves to a software reproduction of the same synth.... 95% of people wont notice the difference, but its a stone cold soiid fact that anyone who knows about such things will be able to spot instantly.
Well, the sound may sound a little different - okay, I'm no musician. But it's never distorted in any way.
But the scrolling IS definitely perfect. It took me a long time to finally get the correct setting in Powerstrip:
At first I tried to downclock my refresh rate - but there was only 50.3 Hz or 49.8 Hz possible - the scrolling was a lot better than before but occasionally you could see tearing here and there. Definitely most noticably in
Pinball Dreams and
Pinball Fantasies.
Then I clocked the refresh rate to 99.992 Hz in Powerstrip.
From then on I had absolutely perfect smooth scrolling - trust me, I know exactly what that means. Pinball Dreams and Fantasies scroll 100% smooth now.
The possible exact refresh rate depends on your screen. It could be that with your lcd Powerstrip only can set you refresh rate to 99.90 Hz or 100.1 Hz - then the scrolling will be good, but not perfect.
You may have typed in "100" but Powerstrip then only chooses the next best possible setting.
It depends on your lcd - with some it's not possible to get close enough to 50Hz or 100Hz.
Seems like I had luck with my lcd:
99.992 Hz vertical refresh rate is so close to 100Hz that I never encounter any non-perfect scrolling.
Note that if you have a CRT-monitor or use a TV that has native 100Hz- (or 50Hz-) refresh rate you also get perfect scrolling
