Future Amos plans?
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:52:49 PM »

Does anyone have any plans to write something this year using Amos/Amos Pro and if so what do you have lined up? A game? Demo? And if you do is it something you are going only use yourself or distribute for others (through Aminet for example).

I know there's a modern version of Amos underway - I don't know a lot about this at the moment but it sounds interesting. Is there any news on the progress and will it run on old Amigas?

The new Amos compatible BASIC is Mattathias and it has two versions planned:  First, the SDL version which will work on AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS, Windows, Mac and Linux.  Second, the AGA chipset classic Amiga version.

The reason I list them in that order is because the SDL version will mostly be based on existing source code such as sdlBasic and Low-Level Virtual Machine.  Since there isn't an LLVM backend for the 68000 series processors yet and the custom copper-lists and sprite functions aren't exactly the same in Amos as in the AmigaOS graphics.library there will be quite a bit more work that will be needed to write the AGA version.

In order to get the latest information on Mattathias, you can join the Yahoo group linked to the little globe under my avatar.  It's a fairly low-traffic mailing list.

As for what I've done in AmosPro so far, I've got a text-scrolling demo in the downloads area called the Ribbons and Curls demo.

SamuraiCrow:

Lots of curiosity questions (Sorry!)

- Amos as I know it takes control of the entire screen. Will it be possible to make small Workbench programs using Mattathias?
- Will the syntax be similar to Amos and fairly easy to learn?
- Will it be possible to port the SDL code straight to the AGA version when it's available?
- Will the AGA version run on non-AGA Classic Amigas?

It will be possible to write small Workbench programs as the extensions become available to do so.  I believe some Amos extensions allow you to do this already.

Although the syntax is based on Amos, the degree to which it will be similar will depend largely upon the similarity of the Amos-compatibility extensions to their original Amos counterparts.

It will be possible to port the SDL code straight to the AGA version if it is written with the Amos-compatibility extensions.

Running the AGA version on non-AGA Classic Amigas will require an interested party to modify the AGA version of the Classic Amiga version of the Amos-compatibility extensions of Mattathias.

In closing, most of the functionality of Mattathias will require extensions be written for it.  The core functionality will be just enough to support those extensions.  There should be enough functionality in the Mattathias core that anybody familiar with either SDL or Amiga can write extensions in Mattathias BASIC.

in regard to the original topic, i still have several AMOS projects on the go which will be picked up during the year.

I will post when any are finished, although i refuse to put a time-scale on any as i have no dea when i will be working on each.

There's a couple of games and game editors basically. And i might do a whdload-slave launcher if PSPUAE gets HD support in the near(ish) future.

err... AMOS projects in (long-term) development:

  • Image (2 colour bitmap) to Dymo Thermal Label printer (project started Jan 2006... coding not started!)
I already have the Dymo docs (since summer '07) in PDF, so it's just the coding that needs to be done.
  • Simple Art 2004 upgrade (project originally planned for release summer last year!)
  • DataR, a mouse movement edit/capture program (needed for AMOS demo). Coding started Dec '07.
  • Demo, only first 10 seconds completed! Music will be from public domain (I have loads of ace music to choose from).
  • AMOS Database, a database of everything AMOS. Project on hold whilst I solve some bugs and gather data for it. Data (and images) are added to Spellcoders site www.amigacoding.com weekly :)
  • Yahoo! AMOSlist archives saved and archived to Aminet. Last one uploaded: Dec 1998.
Jan 1999 to be uploaded shortly. I don't expect this to be finished until summer '08.
  • AMOS extension - easy colour selection and anything I else I *successfully* create!
  • Amiga Mouse Pointer <-> PC mouse pointer program, so I can use my custom pointers on my laptop.

I think that covers everything I'm working on, inbetween work, sleep, food, DVD's, videogames and errr... that's it!

For software I have already uploaded to Aminet, search for "ADBs" (the "s" is needed to ensure you get just my stuff).
