Difference between AMOS vs AmiBlitz
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:15:03 PM »

OK I have just several questions to ask about AMOS Professional. Soon I will be receiving my Amiga 500 with kickstart 1.3 and soon to upgrade from 512 KB RAM to 1 MB of RAM. It does not have any HD yet nor is it using a 68030 processor (just the basic 68000). I need to give the specs of my Amiga computer before I ask these questions.

1) Can Amos Professional work on my Amiga 500?
2) Compared to AmiBlitz 3 can I do everything in AMOS Professional that I would want to do in AmiBlitz 3?
3) Is it easier with AMOS over AmiBlitz 3?
4) What are the limitations of AMOS over AmiBlitz 3?
5) Is there a huge resource of libraries and tutorials and books that I can use to practice developing on AMOS? If it is, where?
6) What is the difference between AMOS Professional vs normal AMOS? Is the difference big?
7) If AMOS professional cannot work on my Amiga 500 (does not have HD yet, and only in floppy) , is there a version of AMOS that does work on Amiga 500?
8) Finally, is there a link where I can download AMOS games or have sources of AMOS games that I can learn from?

Dear Friend:
I will let someone else asnwer all questions in order, as I cannot.
But i will tell you a little bit about amospro. Is very easy to use and learn.I used amiblitz before and it was impossible for me to make a single program. On the other hand, amospro was easy and been using it for years.Amospro can be installed into a floppy disk and use/boot from a floppy -no HD required-. There are a few books that teach how to make nice games in amospro.
1- amiga gamemakers manual
2- mastering amiga amos
3- amos in action
These books are amazing and not expensive, but I guess you would
have to wait for them on amibay or ebay.
I believe amospro 2.x is already installed into a floppy disk and ready to be used, maybe someone here can help you get a copy.
If you go to aminet online (amiga collection of free software) in the
dev section, there is a huge collection of amos example programs,
all free and very nice for learning. There is also a complete cd called amos PD cd, complete with useful games and examples for using amospro. Again, you would have to wait for them on amibay.
I love amospro very big, I made a couple free games in it, which
you can get on aminet
-wiz.lha
-makeria.lha
I tried amiblitz and could not get anything with it.
I tried amospro, and not only was easy to learn and use, i was able
to make my games, plus the learning material is amazing.
If you could get the Amos Pd cd and the books, i assure you will learn to make nice games, and it will be easy to learn.
Good luck !!!  and ask where to get amospro 2.x  floppy disk.

Dear Friend:
Amospro does not need a hard drive disk, it can be installed into one floppy disk to boot from floppy. i believe amospro 2.x is already fit into one floppy disk. I am sure some kind soul here will
be able to help you get a copy -is not copyrighted-
i will definitely choos amospro over amiblitz. But try to get the books and the Amos PD cd, it will help a lot.
Love !!!

Amiblitz 3 requires a floating-point unit to run the editor for some unknown reason.  Blitz Basic does not but still requires Kickstart 2 or better.  AmosPro works on Kickstart 1.3 with 1 meg of RAM.  It works better with more but you get the picture.

And AMOSPro is slowly getting its bugs fixed and its docs brought up to date.  It will take a while, but we have the original sources and a lot of work has already been done on both the code and the docs.  The main problem is that it's so BIG!  From the system programmer's point of view, there's an awesome amount of code to wade through!   ;D  Watch out for a V2.1x release before too long.

Time to ask for some more feedback.  The original V2.0 release on six disks had to leave a lot out to get it to fit on just those six disks.  They also become assigns that are essential to the AMOS code.  But it did mean that AMOS Pro could be used without a HDD.  Once on a HDD, that's no problem - I'm aiming at a HDD install that will probably take up seven or more disks to get the 'missing' bits in.  But that would no longer run as a bootable AMOS Pro for non-HDD systems.  An alternative is to stick with the original six disk format and add one or two extras disks for HDD users.  Yet another is to release an LHA for HDD install only.  It would be nice to do all the above but time is precious and limited.  And this has been going on a long time with no tangible deliverables yet.  So what does the AMOS community want for something 'real soon now'?

Also, go to the downloads section and grab the AMOS Pro manuals and other useful AMOS stuff.  There's an excellent exact copy of the original manual in PDF format by MadAngus complete with bookmarks (where are you MadAngus?).  And another by Asymetrix that's I also bookmarked.  Some details are wrong as are some of the built-in AMOS Pro Help details.  But that's also gradually being fixed.  And none detracts from the ease with which AMOS Pro can get something up and running.  You might also want to get the original AMOS The Creator disks (AMOS 1.3x) as there's a great Sprite600 app in the Extras which gives you 600 animated sprites to get started and play with while you learn the language.  It's worth trawling the 'net for other AMOS manuals too.  Go for it and welcome to the AMOS community.  8)

Feedback, feedback, feedback, feedback, feedback...  ;D

I think the best idea is to stick with the 6 disks, and have extra disks for those with HDD's. That way it's easy to distinquish what the extra content is.

I prefer two versions. One that is the six disks and it no longer get any update after that and future updates with better juicy stuff on a HD version that are installable from disks .adf or LHA package. This way, people with Amiga 500 and no HD will use the six disks but be limited with that version for life and if he or she wants to get the better version with more features he or she will need to get a HD for his or her Amiga 500 or any computer and download the latest version :D I do not mind this approach at all either.
