i was always of the opinion that if os4/5 or whatever was developed for Intel/AMD chipsets with backwards compatibility, then we would have had a huge choice in hardware and may have well gone down the spectacular success that linux has had.  but thats just pure speculation....

as for the PS3 - would be good to see UAE on that.  i plan to get one early next year.

Well, you can already install linux and a few other variants/OS's on to the PS3, so surely there must be some sort of UAE for linux or one of those OS's? I know this isn't the OS5 you all want but its a start. If that is correct, then I wonder if you could mount the PS3's CD drive as an emulated miggy drive...

Does anyone here know the extent to which the PS3 can be used as a personal computer? Do you think there are certain tasks the PS3 just wont be able to accomplish that a PC could?

hmnnnmnm

I've got a feeling that the PS3 will be "fixed" by sony to only play Sony certified stuff in no time :/

But thats my opinion ;)

Yes, but Linux on PS3 is heavily limitated. You cannot use PS3 graphics hardware, and PS3 BD drive is still a mistery. The best thing they've done until now, is a strange program to dump a little of Blu-ray contenents on a HD.

Hm... Seeing the current homebrew situation right now (zero)... The PS3 is almost useless, as a Personal Computer. It can only run Linux but cannot use much, and if I remember correctly, it can't even use X fully.

Always the same Sony policy: "You have a good hardware, but we don't like to have you using it".

Sry Sappo, but I think your wrong... [edit] There is quite a bit you can do already and as for the graphics card, there are no 'PC' type drivers, but it wont be too long before someone makes their own or Sony releases some software that can make use of the graphics card. I dont expect them to release drivers or anything like that because they dont exactly want unlicensed developers working on it without having to buy the dev kits and so forth.

Its still very early in this machines life span and way too early for anything to be released that turns it into a functional computer rather than an entertainment system.

Wikipedia says it all: ;)
Quote from: Wikipedia
    Main article: PlayStation 3 Linux

Sony has included an option in the XMB menu to install other operating systems.[92] Among other Linux distributions, Ubuntu, Fedora Core 5, Gentoo, Debian, and Yellow Dog have been run on the PS3.[93][94][95][96]

Sony currently implements a hypervisor restricting RSX access,[97]

That's not about drivers, that's an hypervisor, and until there's not a trace of full homebrew on PS3, no means to use the RSX. And I doubt that Sony would let developers use something more than that (see PSP, after lots of firmwares hacked, still no sign of surrending to Homebrew) :P

Why edit, Horace? ???

Why does everyone quote wikipedia, IT COULD BE WRONG, as anyone can enter the information there. Even a monkey, imagine that, ;). I could go on there and edit it and say SONY have been in talks to purcahse the Amiga brand, and people would believe it.

I almost forgot that Wikipedia is put together by fan boys. Very good point FOL, but these things are reviewed and so forth by a lot of people, not  completely reliable, but you cant go far wrong with it.

Sappo, I sent you a PM explaining what was removed in my previous post, it was nothing at all serious, unless you get into tantrums, but you seem smart enough to not take everything you read to heart.  :)

Oh, no problem then. :)

I quote Wikipedia for the same reason, FOL. :) If there are Anti-Sony Fanboys, there are Sony Fanboys too, so I find it difficult that with so much Sony fanboys around, someone wouldn't edit that, after reading that article, if isn't true :P
