FAQ: How do i make my own online pack?
« on: January 14, 2007, 11:49:10 PM »

If you are thinking this, because you wish to contribute to the amigaonline project, you should find this thread useful.

to answer this question;  here is a post i made some time ago on the amigagames.com forum regarding the matter.

if any mods could care to look over this and add anything they feel is needed, it'd be appriciated.

In order to make your own online pack....

you need;
* A basic knowledge of UAE setups / configs

* Some idea how to make HDF files and create auto-booting HDFs featuring HD installs of the wanted games -all basic workbench knowledge

i.e. editing startup-sequences, making sure you have required librarys etc (rarely needed) and some familiarity with HD installed amiga games

* A Hex Editor - You can find a freeware hex-editor at this link here

* A bit of time for trial & error

----

just have a look at the contents of one of the single zip archives, or an unpacked gamefolder from the BigPack.

all you do is;
* copy an existing kaillera-uae game folder

* change the HDF file for one which autoboots the wanted game (or starts a menu to select from a few games - i just used very simple key-remapping to make my menus) - the HDF should just be made up in a regular version of win-uae.

* un-protect and edit the kaillera.uae config file. (with notepad) try to minimise the requirements for memory, collision detection etc. you can make the config AGA, but it doesnt seem to always work. obviously this is where the trial-and-error comes in, because its not always easy finding a setup that works on that particular version of uae, and it helps if you know what the change the settings to! oh and dont forget to redirect it to your new HDF name

* If you change the kickfile, please stick to the naming convention of kick13.rom , kick30.rom etc and ensure the config points to this.

* reprotect the .uae file before running uae for testing - otherwise it will add extraneous*** controller information into the settings.

*** any excuse to use a long word.

* write protect the HDF file

* once you've got a working HDF & kaillera.uae setting file, you'll need to hex edit the main UAE exe -sounds dodgy i know, but its to stop the games all appearing under the same name on the kaillera server. just search through the file for the name of the old game; e.g. search "speedball" and find something like "speedball2 amiga online v0.1" and change this to something suitable. if your new name is too long, (i.e. goes beyond the 0.1) shorten the name, if its too short, just puts spaces on the end or in the middle. its safer that way.

* if need be i or one of the moderators here can always do this last bit.

* try and test it against someone (although i confess i dont always)

* zip up the folder, e-mail it to one of the staff here and i'll upload it and include it in the next bigpack!

because winuae is made of code and your amiga is made of stuff
