Problems creating R.I.S.S.!
« on: July 20, 2007, 05:46:30 PM »

Hello guys :)

I'm getting into R.I.S.S. creation.
No problem in creating the RAM-extracting Floppies...

The problem is that the game, being a 5 full floppies, requires a little over 4mb of RAM. So, 4mb will not suffice. The only other setting after 4mb is 8mb. So, ok, I have to use that.

Next thing. For some strange reason, if I use 2mb Chip and 8mb Fast, PSPUAE crashes when inserting the floppy :O

Also another thing. When loaded, the WHDLoad game is MUCH slower than when loaded from Floppy. And this happens even on WinUAE.

Why?

Thanks :)

what game? i would like to do some tests.

i wonder if there is something to stop the game running too fast on higher processors? (affecting the already slow pspuae)

either that or its a UAE/config problem - which is why it happens on winuae too... if you can find a setup where this doesnt happen, using winuae, you can then just copy the settings!

for the mem issue;

try using 1 meg chip and 8 fast, many whd games work with just this, or use 2 chip 4 fast and 1 bogo (this works in a simiar way to fast ram anyway)

i know when memory allowances are high, pspuae crashes on inserting floppies (partilcuarly HD floppies which are larger) because it "tips" the memory restrictions over the edge, causing a crash.... although FOL has tried to prevent this with some recent updates i think.

Thanks Horace :)

The game is Colonel's Bequest, from Sierra. If I remember correctly, sometimes the game worked with only 1 chip and 8 fast, but only on 3.0.

I would gladly make some other tests, but yesterday the monitor of the PC where I was working on started displaying strange colors, and now it's sitting open, waiting for me to solder a new VGA cable on a strange socket :/

"only on 3.0" ?

just to be sure, please make sure all the R.I.S.S you do, use kick 3.0 or kick 1.3 - as we like to keep some kind of consistancy.

for our purposes, kick 3.1 gives no benefits, and tends to only cause confusion.

No problem, I myself only use 1.3 and 3.0 usually, I tend to use 2.0 and 3.1 only for tests :)

Also tonight I'll use another monitor, while I try to repair mine, so I can continue the R.I.S.S. development :P
