Why is it soooo slow???
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:06:17 PM »

Hiya, i have psp with custom firmware 4.01 m33-2

I can run the emulator fine (the latest 072) and every game i try just runs sluggish and the sound is stutered. My Gp2x plays amiga games fine.

Is this emu supposed to play games properly?

Ive tried sensible soccer, lotus challange and ik+.

All jerk and are basically unplayable. Ive fiddled around with settings, cpu is max, my speed is 266% sometimes. Ive even turned sound OFF and its just slow.

Am i doing something wrong?

help?

thanks

I suggest you read the control and options guide and try harder.

http://www.ultimateamiga.co.uk/index.php/topic,431.0.html

and search the forum.

Thanks for that REALLY helpfull reply, you sure are encouraging people to use this forum/emulator arnt you!

Ive already read that guide, i know what pressing up does, what df0 options are thanks, it doesnt actaully tell me why after pressing/changing ALL the options the speed stays slow and jerky.

Ive searched this forum and ive found many out of date topics that dont cover my problem.

I asked a question which im sure you know the answer for and im told to "go search" brilliant.

Had it not occured to you i already have and im asking the nice people of this newly joined forum for help as a last resort? mm

Like i say, ive tried every config i can think of.

If i need to select certain settings for my firmware then i can understand. But the emu in its default state is rubbish.

Just help would be very nice, just to be told "all you have to do is"

not just "go search"

if you cant help then dont say anything, as its not helping

Not got off to a good start there fella's lol (I hope thats not really your DS Horace!)

Pspuae 0.72 offers certain games good speed and certainly good playability, the problems are when you pick a certain game that runs badly on the emu, and it's config is setup badly to, Then things can look pretty ugly.

My advise is to pick a game that runs well (hopefully it's one of your favorites) then set the frameskip between 30-39 rather than auto.
set the turbo to on, change the cpu to chipset ratio to 30-65%. I find these three things are the most important with lots of games.

It's a matter of setting each game up manually to achieve the best speeds/smoothness and playability.

It can take some time to experiment with what works best for each game, but it can lead to pleasing results if your willing to put te effort in for your favorite games  :)

I also recommend you search the http://www.youtube.com/pspuae for the game your looking for (hopefully its available to view)
You can then  see how it should run on pspuae and decide if it's worth trying out.

I've never seen the GP2x running Amiga games first hand, so it's hard to compare to pspuae.

What I do know is, FOL and Horace have spent lots of their time trying to get things running fairly well. Its come a long way from it's early days.
Amiga emulation on a psp is very difficult to achieve, especially compaired to SNES, NES systems ect.

Hope this seems to help, please try a few more games and experiment with the settings, I'm sure you will be able to find something your happy to play. I have found many games that are very playable and give hours of fun.

It is not my place to 'encourage' the usage of the emulator, but to maintain the forum and I will always answer respectable comments to the best of my knowledge.

Your post shows you obviously havent adjusted frameskip or tried the cpu-chipset settings, (both mentioned in that guide that you claim to have read all of) which will massively affect the speed, otherwise you would not be claiming....

Quote
pressing/changing ALL the options the speed stays slow and jerky.

You get this reply because this is the sort of complaint that is banded-around over and over again, whilst many (most) users manage perfectly well just by reading a few posts or reading the above guide. Those that still stuggle often get helped when asking in a respectable manner why they are doing something wrong.

Writing such as:
Quote
All jerk and are basically unplayable.

Tells us that its something you're (not) doing, but your post seems to imply its some kind of emulator fault rather than a user-error, with rude responses such as:

Quote
Is this emu supposed to play games properly?

Perhaps if you hadnt made such comments as this you might have got a more helpful response, and no, it has nothing to do with your firmware, and you dont even tell us an example of a config you are using for a particular game, or what games you are trying, which isnt particularly helpful either.

delta is quite right, experiment and tell us the full details of an example config, and perhaps your problem can be rectified. Branding the emulator as 'sluggish' from-the-off is not likely to get a positive response from the people who have spent hours improving this emulator for the benefit of others.

Further similar responses will lead to this topic being locked.

All I can say is im sorry you feel that way, and that we have gotten off on the wrong foot.
However you have to understand how frustrating it is for us to see these types of comments all the time.

Im not concerned with GP2X, as that uses an ASM core (Cyclone). If you have an ASM core for PSP, be my guest and intergrate it. You cant compare GP2X UAE to PSP UAE, end of discussion.

Thanks for the replies, nice to know people can help.

Im very experienced with WINUAE, i know all about the amiga and my gp2x can run amiga games full speed. The problem i have is from the default settings on pspuae is games dont run. Of course ive tried frameskip and cpu speed. neither worked for me. I remember ages ago using an amiga emulator on psp which ran smoothly. I just assumed (wrongly) that an emu that has been tinkered with for a while and a new release (4 weeks ish) would be able to run games without having to fiddle with settings.

Its a beautiful emu and im pleased its out. I guess its not quite usuable at the mo, i have a LOT of fave games and i just want to whack in a adf and play. I guess thats why is 072 rather than 1.0 lol

not to mention, if you add the right frameskip and chipset options and there are only a handful of ECS games which wont reach 50fps.

this is kind of comment which will attract negative replies. It's frankly not true.

you probably tried uae4all PSP, which has massive instability problems, and newer versions of PSPUAE are just as fast.

no one ever said the default settings would run smooth. try the default settings of WinUAE on a 333hz machine and show us how well it runs.

funny... they work for everyone else?

just like winuae , you set up the game, and save a config for that game. there is no reason you cant do this with PSPUAE.

Also, once you save a config for adf x, pspuae will reload that config, everytime that adf is inserted.

Please, show me the version that ran smoothly with default settings. PSPUAE has come along way since it was dumped at 0.41.
Its annoying noone seems to aknowledge this, :(. I have spent alot of my own time getting it to run faster, and its slowly gained speed release after release.
Sound is crap, we know this, until something better is sorted on the sound front, this is all we have.

I have also asked for help with PSPUAE, but know 1 is interested in helping with the coding.

some of us do acknowledge the hard work (from many people), and that's why comments such as some of the above push me over the edge.  >:(

Hi all, especially FOL,
I'm happy with PSPUAE and I enjoy my favorite games on it nearly every day. I really appreciate your hard work and I wish I was a coder and could contribute, but I tried once decades back but didnt get anywhere. I guess most people here, who dont post a lot, like your work and just use it. So keep up the excellent work guys!

I'm getting annoyed now.......

Not sure if this a delibrate attempt at rubbishing pspuae and FOL's work, smells a bit fishy  :-\

This emulator is one of the best things I keep on my psp, and I run virtually everything on the damn thing.

I'm willing to spend hours trying to get certain games running really well. Horace is correct, a really good percentage of ECS games can be made to run very well but not perfectly.

It sounds like some people just want to pop in an ADF and away we go, perfect amiga emulation on a 333 htz PSP.   ::)

Come on Dan, you know it isn't as slooooooooo as you say. I know IK+ can be made to run at a decent speed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUh47zggBnM

It sounds like you can't be bothered setting things up, or your getting pleasure from bashing up Pspuae, I suspect the later.

it was mrbob2 who said it, not dan.

it does seem at times as if PSPUAE takes a lot more of this bashing than anything else.

oh aye, sorry Dan  :o

And for the record, UAE4ALL is no good for games that require saving your progress!

It has no savestate option unlike pspuae, something i find very useful with games like dungeon master and silent service II.

I dont have an Amiga but I do have pspuae! thank god for FOL's emu  :)
