Old Amos user, still hanging about....
« on: January 28, 2008, 01:45:37 PM »

Hello to everyone in the forum,

I've joined up because it seems like a nice place to share some memories and perhaps have a tinker with Amos and some new downloads. I wrote some very mildly successful shareware / PD disks in the early 90s - Top of the League football game probably being most popular. I have the downloads on my website (ADF files) although I'm still in the process of amending and adding readme files with the downloads to make it a bit easier to know what's in them.

I programmed my last Amos program in 1995 and packed away the Amiga in 1998. I still like to get a real Amiga running every now and then though (I'm now on my 3rd machine) and I'm soon to have a bit of desk space in the house for a permanent area for my A500! I never graduated on to Amos Professional though, only ever owned Amos the Creator. I noticed it can be downloaded from here and I'm curious what the key additions are to the Professional edition, a compiler perhaps? Does it work on a bog standard A500 kickstart 1.3? Can Amos programs run on all Amigas, even OS4?

And is anyone still programming with the classic Amos the Creator and are there any advantages sticking with that?

I'm sure I have some more curiosity questions but I'll hold back for now!

All the best,
Tony

Hello straycat,

AmosPro version 1.12 upgrades to version 2.0 with the addition of the compiler.  The extension format between AmosPro and Amos the Creator are incompatible so you'd be better off with AmosPro if only to use the AMCAF extension version 1.5b .

AmosPro works great on Kickstart 1.3 and will work on AmigaOS up to version 3.9 .   Since 4.0 uses PowerPC code and the AmigaOne models don't support the Amiga custom graphics and sound chips, they cannot run Amos code.  A new sequel to AmosPro is being developed called the Mattathias project.  (Mattathias was the son of the biblical prophet Amos.)

Welcome to the Amos Factory and I hope you enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the info Sam.

Are there manuals for AmosPro or AMCAF available for download anywhere?

Cheers

The AmosPro manual was printed and is now out of print.  :(

The AMCAF manual is included in the archive but there are some programming examples at http://aminet.net/package/dev/amos/AMCAFExt140Exa.

For the old AMOS The Creator there are text versions of the manual online.
(I think some madman typed the whole manual over :P)
The AMOSPro manual is online available as book and like SamuariCrow it's out of print.

However AMOSPro has an inbuild help system (press the Help key while in the editor),
which also has info about all instructions. It mostly meant as a reference I think,
but still can be quite usefull.
I've converted the 900+ articles from this helpsystem for online use, you can find those
on http://www.amigacoding.com
In the AMOS box, go to 'Full AMOShelp' if you want to navigate using the same old menu
that's in the AMOShelp system. Or just go to 'Instructions', 'Keys in editor' etc.

straycat,

welcome to the forum.

I am attempting to put a new AMOS CD together some point in the future. I would like to be able to include your games/software on it. Would that be ok with you?

At the moment I am in the process of archiving the yahoo amos list group messages and putting them on aminet, aswell as helping spellcoder with the www.amigacoding.com site :)

lonewolf10, I would be honoured to have them included on your CD! Still having a little hassle getting some of my disks over to PC using Amiga Explorer. Probably the null modem cable. So far I have four games in ADF format, with a few more to come soon hopefully.

Amigacoding looks like an excellent resource, keep up the good work!

Hello Everyone,

Like Straycat, I have just reinstalled my good old amiga (which has slept in my attic for more than 10 years).
I coded an amiga game using Amos. It is called Super Bubble Remix. I uploaded it on aminet in early 1999. The last
version was 1.2 on aminet. I have just uploaded the ultimate version (1.3) which I found on my hard drive (it fixes some
bugs in the highscore table).
I have still the source code. If someone is interested, I can send him.
Perhaps I will open again my old amos manuals (yes i have amos and amos compiler in original version !)

By the way, is there someone here who has already played (or simply loaded) my game. I am already asking if someone has ever played
to my game (more than 2 years of work...).

Bye

Hello SPH, I've downloaded SBR but can't do a lot with it yet as my WinUAE setup isn't ready, and my real A500 doesn't have an accelerator :(

Will let you know what I think once I can run it :)

By the way is there a floppy bootable ADF version?

Hi Straycat,

10 years ago we made a one disk version of the game which i have always on my harddisk.

It must be the 1.2 version (with a bug in highscore table). But i can send it by mail if you want.
