Back with AMOS!
« on: November 18, 2011, 07:54:11 PM »

Hey!

I have gotten myself a couple of Amigas the last years again. First I got an A1200, and now I have two A2000's and one A500 in addition (in a sad state, just to add...).

Anyway, I've been using my main A2000 (which has 3 megs of ram (GVP) and a GVP harddrive of 50 mbs) for DPaint IV. I'm in the demo group Resistance, and I've done a few oldschool gfx for Solskogen. This old Amiga has Workbench 2.0, which I never owned before. I jumped directly from WB1.3 to 3.0 (and further). I never knew how capable 2.0 was. There's practically no difference from 3.0 (unless you install an RTG card and other commodities).

The reason why I am writing here, is because I was remembering AMOS. On Aminet, I released a platformgame I called Squeek back in 1997. I was 17. I used to love programming in AMOS basic. But I had no idea how hardware worked, really, and I was only using simple functions to do what I wanted.

Many many years later, I now have been programming professionally for over ten years. I have good knowledge about memory, and even Amiga programming (in c). So. I was now starting coding on a real Amiga. And I haven't really bothered setting up a C environment. Because it sucks ass. :) Long story short, if that's possible, I picked up Amos from BackToRoots and downloaded the manual. I chose Amos The Creator, even though I have Amos Professional (bought and paid for in the 90s). I always loved that original, even though the Professional version had more juice.

With new skill, I started using some of the more advanced AMOS features now, and I can do much much more than I could back in the day. So I started on a platformer, and I'm well on my way to making my level editor useful. It can save and load level data, paint tiles etc.

So I just wanted to start a thread, because I plan on developing a good old platformer for ECS/OCS Amigas, and if some of you have similar projects, this would be a good thread to POKE in. I'm gonna try to push AMOS as far as I can, but most importantly, make an enjoyable platformer with good gfx and good music :)

So! Feel free to drop your comments! I'll post screenies as I have them.

Welcome,

Awesome first post.

Im sure some of the regular Amos guys will have lots to say.
Alot were put off by our site merge. It made sense to merge all sites as they were amiga related.

I know Samurai Crow is doing stuff with Amos, hes working on a new compiler based on amos (correct me if Im wrong guys / gals).
Hungry Horace and Nova Coder are well into Amos too.

A new compiler? That's interesting :) I saw some info here and there around the web, and that the source was released. That's kind of exciting. Would this do away with a dependency on amos.library or is it just a replacement for AMOS' already existing compiler?

Many would ask: Why use AMOS? To me, Basic is very easy to use when you consider making all the data yourself, from Gfx to Music to Code. To manage all the data, there is usually a lot more work going on if you have to implement everything in C. Anyway, however this might be for different developers, to me, coding in AMOS also makes sense since it takes care of memory management. It makes the coding process friendlier and saves me a lot of time. Since AmigaOS doesn't have memory protection, coding in a basic dialect removes a lot of frustration :D

Oh, and I must not understate the nostalgic value of coding in AMOS. A tool is more than just a tool.
