Vampire 2 board
« on: April 04, 2016, 03:33:05 PM »

Has everyone been informed about this new accelerator card?  It transforms 16 bit Amigas into high end powerhouses.  So far it has chunky graphics, '020 compatibility, 64 bit vector instructions like the MMX had, and badass speed that beats an '060!

What's the basis for saying inferior?
I'm not disagreeing, just interested.

The guy who is building the next batch of boards (kipper2k) produced one of my psx-cd32 adaptors and the board itself was excellent  quality, as were the parts directly mounted to it - it was let down only by the very thin wiring to the psx controller socket, which eventually disconnected... Although admittedly probably not help by my Mis-handling of it.

The board looks like it's gonna cost a lot less but deliver a lot more juice than many of the more "commercial" competitors, which I guess is why it's getting people so excited.

I won't be buying either - I like my a600 /030 already :)

@Xertese

Keep in mind that the A600 version is their bottom level model.

Which components would you change if you had the chance to make one?  It might help the design of the A1200 version.  The only parts that are set are the Altera FPGA and any parts other than that must be available in Serbia.

Why don't you make a better one then?

I have written code to flash the A600 2.04 ROM and created a link converter cable to be used in conjunction with the squirrel scsi interface and recoded Workbench kernel from AmigaOS 3.9 to enable hook up of an Nvidia GTX660 so no need for me to build a board i can use current hardware by making new software.

I also heard, you can get a core that will turn it into an AGA machine. Anyone confirm this?

Neat!  What CPU are you on?

On the Motorola 68000 CPU and i know where you're trying to go with this line of questioning but i hate to burst your bubble because the re-written kernal from OS 3.9 removes all CPU cycles pertaining to GFX and routes them to the GTX660 through the modified squirrel port.

The reason I was asking was that the Vampire 2 can beat a 68060 clock per clock with the compatibility of an 020.  It's just that the graphics core is not very advanced by comparison.  Does that nVidia card speed up the software much?

Nothing written will run on this setup yet but to answer your question yes the GTX would blow any Amiga out of the water and then some.

Because of how the ROM has been recoded and the kernal things are a little unstable at the moment.

I have had WB 2.04 running but it seems i may have to code an OS from scratch to deal with a few incompatabilities

Is there any news? I saw your presentation video at Amiwest last year...

the only problem I have with the Vampire2 is it's unavailability... lol

If (when) I could get my hands on one I'll be writing an AMOS extension and doing real DSP and GPU stuff with FxBox   8)

Majsta put through a big mass-production so the V500+ should be available again soon.  I don't have the V500 anymore because it had a malfunction and couldn't be repaired.

 8) Trailblazing is sometimes quite expensive, and it doesn't always work out - don't remind me... lol

But that doesn't put me off - am hoping for an a600 as the audio is louder and clearer than an a1200 IMO. I think for me an a500 would be too old and crusty, and the motherboard is huge.
